2. The Argument from Efficient Causaltiy

The second argument of Saint Thomas Aquinas is the Argument from Efficient Causality.  See here for the purpose of these posts.

As we observe the world we notice that some things cause others to be. A man plays the piano and music exists. He stops, and the music stops.

All things exist by other things. A canyon exists because a river flowed there. I exist because of my parents' union- and their parents' union and so on.

If there is no first cause- no Uncaused Being, no God, than there can be no existence.

There must be some thing uncaused- some Giver of existence. If everyone needs to borrow a particular book, but no one has the book, then no one can borrow it.

If there is no God- no Giver of Existence who has existence by His very nature- there can be no gift of existence passed down.

I'm loving this series you're doing. The first proof is my favorite-- I thought about it for days!

Love you!

I really like that last sentence-- is that your own or T.A.'s? It's all so profound!

Thanks! These proofs reveal so much about who God is. It's hard NOT to stand in awe after you read them!

The last sentence is mine- though borrowed heavily from Kreeft/Tacelli's book.
