Au Naturale- Hygiene Edition!

When my aunt casually mentioned several months ago that soap contains endocrine disrupters, the thought stayed with me.  It haunted me.  Every time I washed my hand, body or hair, I wondered what it was doing to my cycle which is already so delicate.  In February, I was learning the merits of coconut oil and was encouraged to try it on my face instead of lotion.  I was skeptical, but the thought of those endocrine disrupters motivated me.  So when Lent came around, I decided it was prime time to give it a try.  Here's what I'm doing these days.  I'm in the baby steps of experimenting, but so far things are going great!

  1. FACE CARE:  I stopped washing my face.  ME!  I have ALWAYS struggled with acne and have had constant break outs since I was twelve.  So to stop washing my face was a bold move.  In an even bolder move, I began to add OIL to my face!  Coconut oil, that is.  Twice a day, I rub my face with a wash cloth (I wear minimal make up) and then add a minuscule amount of coconut oil on my face.  The result?  MY FACE IS CLEAR.  For the first time EVER, my face is CLEAR!
  2. BODY: The coconut oil worked so well on my face that I decided to use it on my body, too!  It's awesome!
  3. SUN CARE: Instead of chemical based lotions that are absorbed into your skin (yes, I know everything is a chemical, but you know what I mean!) I have switched to mineral based.  Best news of all?  I found Johnson & Johnson's Baby Daily Face & Body was rated (almost) as high as California Babies. And it's available from Amazon's subscribe and save for a great price! (12 ounces for $22.43 instead of California Baby's 3 ounces for $17!)
  4. HAIR CARE: Good by shampoo!!!  No more sodium laureth sulfates, parabens or phytalates in my hair!  Instead?  BAKING SODA!  I filled an old shampoo bottle with water and dumped in several spoonfuls of baking soda.  Twice a week I rinse with apple cider vinegar which moisturizes!  (Who knew?!)  My hair is tangle free and CLEAN!  (Thank you, Aunt Julie, for this valuable information!)
  5. DEODORANT: I thought I might be crossing a line here, but while researching hair and skin, I kept reading about the dangers of aluminum in deodorant.  I didn't think my current deodorant worked that great, so I decided to try this, too.  I mixed 1 part baking soda to 3 parts corn starch in a little tupperware.  After my shower I add a dash of coconut oil under my arms, then use a cotton ball to apply the soda/starch mixture.  The result?  I sweat now, but am thinking that's probably a good thing!  But I don't stink!  It does wear off by the end of the day, but I don't mind and neither does J.
  6. FOR LADIES ONLY: I bought a reusable feminine product and decided to try that, too.   It's called the Keeper and is a little cup.  It's supposed to last TEN YEARS.  I'm not going to detail my reviews here, but if you're interested, email me.
  7. NEXT UP?  Dr. Bronner's soap.  I've ordered a couple of bottles and am anxious for them to come in for my body.  Does anyone know if you can use this instead of anti-bacterial soap when washing hands?
Stay tuned for Au Naturale- the Nutrition Edition!

Love this. I am right there with you. I use natural citris cleaners and tons of vinegar. But, I still love my rubbing alcohol.

We make homemade soap and lip balm. My soap is made from coconut oil! Thanks for the great tips. I found your blog from We Are Grafted In. We are pursuing adoption and are almost approved! Your daughter is BEAUTIFUL!

Totally do a lot of these too!

YEAH!

I tend to avoid deodorant anyway (my mom was never a fan), but I read that a popular alternative is just using a fresh lemon slice up there in the morning. If the summer starts to get unbearable, I may have to try that! I would think it would be sticky. :)

Also, I have heard great things about your approach to feminine products, but to be quite honest, I can't bring myself to do it yet. Perhaps some day...

Wow! This is awesome! I would love to do some of these things. Is coconut oil expensive? I would love to do the chemical-free sun screen, but Johnson and Johnson supports Planned Parenthood, and my husband and I try to avoid companies that do that, and that other stuff is so expensive...

I think I'm definitely going to try the shampoo...My hair tangles SO easily, and I can never find a shampoo that I like. Does the vinegar smell?

Thank you so, so much for all of these tips! :)

Leilas head is spinning....Umm the keeper...Nope, can't do it! ;) hahahaha What comes down must come out! hahahahahaha

GAS, my hair is a tangled mess too and it gets the tangles out. Plus my hair seems to be so much straigter and manageable since switching...My hair is long too.

The vinegar smells going on and that is it. My hair just smells clean. ;) I use it on H's head too. :)

I'm so excited about all of this!!!!! Well maybe not the Keeper thing. :) I'm not sure about that yet. :)

I've been wanting to stop using deodorant for awhile but I'm nervous.

Does the coconut oil make your skin oily? I have terrible skin too. Also, what brand did you buy?

I got the Dr. Bronner's tea tree soap yesterday. IT IS AWESOME! I washed my face with it last night (diluted) and my face has never felt so clean. It got every speck of makeup off. My skin was so soft this morning and already less red.

Leila- I'll email you!

Allie- a lemon wedge? Seriously?! HAHA! We'll see how this homemade deodorant does in the hot summer! The jury's still out, but so far so good!

GOS- Thanks for the comment! I didn't realize that about J&J. Gosh it seems like you have to live under a rock to avoid all companies who do things you don't agree with! And why would J&J support a company that's killing their potential customers? Sheesh.

The vinegar smells terrible (I'll be honest!) but only for a moment. Once you've rinsed it out, you're fine. I do the rinse with Abigail in the shower with me and she doesn't bat an eye.

Sew- your enthusiasm cracks me up and encourages me to do more! I've created a monster! :) Just kidding!!! you use it on H's head?!? Seriously?! That hadn't occurred to me. Abigail's hair is SO tangly. Maybe I should try. So far I've just been using Burt's Bees for shampoo and then coconut oil for conditioner/detangler.

and the keeper- you do realize it does come out, right? Your comment left me a little confused. I'll email you my review.

Karen- IT DOESN'T!!! It's amazing! I was so skeptical, but it totally works. I use the Radiant Life brand http://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/product/COCONUT-OIL-EXTRA-VIRGIN-ORGANIC-CENTRIFUGE-EXTRACTED/healthy-fats-oils. I don't know if I'll continue to use something that fancy for external use, but it's what I had on hand. (I use it to make Abigail's formula- more on that in the next post)

Wow, you guys are amazing doing all this s tuff do avoid disrupting your hormonal harmony. I guess I better climb aboard. I guess the only thing I have done is bought my son Green Beaver soap wash. Anyone have a recipe for washing clothes?

For everyone interested in (or thinking you couldn't possibly try) the Keeper, I have an extremely detailed review posted. I had first a Keeper, now a similar product called the Diva Cup, for almost 14 years, and reusable cups are FABULOUS! Convenient, comfortable, and can make your period SHORTER and reduce cramps! Lauren, you may find that your cycle problems are reduced after using it for a while.

You never cease to amaze me, and that picture in the top right of your blog is so precious!!!!!

I am lovin this post, I have been worried about the chemicals I use daily especially the past few months, so thanks for the refresher course in all things natural :)

I am going to try the coconut oil, I have always struggled with acne too, glad to hear your skin is clearing up!

I use vinegar lately to help my hair (I have had some dry scalp during this pregnancy) and am going to try the baking soda instead. I already only wash my hair every 3 days and use dry shampoo (which is tea tree oil and natural starches) inbetween days.

Have you ever heard of the crystal deodorant?? I used to use it, and think it is all natural too....

Gonna try that Dr. Bronners soap, but I can't live without my coppertone - I am crazily addicted to the smell!! LOL

alliemich said...

But....I wear alot of makeup, wonder if it will take it all off? Also what about natural makeup ?? Any advice?

Karen said...

Alliemich: I wear a lot of makeup too. He Dr. Bronner's took off every single bit of it. It worked way better than any face wash or makeup remover I have ever used.

We LOVE coconut oil in our home. I think we go through a gallon in just over a month. We use it for everything from skin & hair care to cooking and baking. It also makes a great natural lubricant (I can't believe I'm writing that.) when one is needed.

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

LOL Char! Where do you get yours?

As I'm sitting here typing, Abigial is antsy, so I handed her the lid to the coconut oil and she's having a ball. I dont' care if she eats it or gets it all over! It's so awesome!

Karen- good to know! I can't wait for my Dr. Bronner's to come in!

Allie- I wear the bare minimums 99% of the time- mineral bronzer (I'm trying to look like Abigail, haha!), mascara and lipstick. A wet wash cloth seems to work well enough for me. So glad to hear Dr. Bronner's works so well, too!

Laura @ Life Is Beautiful said...

My mom and I are so into all this stuff!! I love your tips! I cook with coconut oil, but now will have to try it on my face.
We love Dr. Bronner's soap, by the way. Yes, you can use it for handsoap, but it's a little watery.

'Becca said...

I came back because I realized I forgot to give my big thumbs-up for Dr. Bronner's soap! It's very concentrated, so it's ideal for refilling a soap foamer: Fill it most of the way with warm water, add a tablespoon or two of soap, screw in the lid, and shake. It smells so good, isn't as drying as most soaps, and at least the tea tree, lavender, and peppermint versions have antibacterial properties. Great stuff. It isn't as expensive as it seems because a little goes a long way!

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

'Becca you are a wealth of information! I haven't read your review of the Keeper yet, but am looking forward to it during A's nap time!

Unfortunately I'm getting a 2nd chance to try it out now. Ugh.

Mmmmmmm.... you are tempting me Lauren. :-)

I haven't heard much about the Keeper, but my friends and I have found the Diva Cup to be a great product.

Love all of the coconut oil ideas...works great for popping popcorn, too.

Very interesting!! I'm definitely going to try some of these! Thanks for sharing!!

Blessed and Broken said...

another "cup" user here, lol. I am diva girl. If you have difficulties (as I did the first several months)...there are actually you tube videos that you can find with alternative folding options. I don't know if a keeper will turn inside out...but that works best for me with a diva.

Oh...and Coconut oil has another use too. ;-)

polkadot said...

I need to try using coconut oil! :) Do you rub it on your face in its liquid or solid state? (or doesn't it matter?) Does it get all over your pillow at night?

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

I'm so lookign up that you tube video!!!

Polka dot- mine's still solid. I just get a little on my fingers and it melts. I hardly use any. It's completely absorbed within a few minutes. Try it!!!!

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

WHERE IS SAID VIDEO????? Help Elizabeth!

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

Elizabeth I found said video and tried it and it was SO MUCH EASIER. I NEVER would have thought to look on you tube EVER. Wow. Thank you SO MUCH. Awesome.

The Keeper...very interesting...I've tried the baking soda and vinegar and my hair is just too oily. Did you have a transition period or anything? I did it for three days and my hair looked and felt so disgusting I just had to wash it.
Also, for your face...I use a mixture of evoo and castor oil. I have been washing my face with oil, and it's never looked better. However, I have breakouts whenever I drink milk. The castor oil has natural anti-inflammitory properties which soothe the breakouts and help them go away faster. Just a tip:)

What section does one find coconut oil in the store?

Anonymous said...

Lauren ~ I buy our coconut oil from Amazon's subscribe & save. Free shipping and a reasonable price too. Also, I can't wait to see if the formula you're making for your sweet Abigail is the same recipe I used for my kiddos.

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

what an awesome tip, Char! I never thought to look there! And we use the Nourishing Traditions recipe. What did you use? Yea for homemade formula!

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

Lee- I think they sell it with the other oils- olive, vegetable, canola... I ordered mine on-line.

Marisa said...

Great information! You sold me on the keeper - I'm going to try it and some of the other suggestions too. Thanks! Always nice to hear from someone you know who has tried something.

Anonymous said...

i love that you posted it! i've used the diva cup for almost 3 years now and i love it. suprisingly, i REALLY love it while traveling as its good for 12 hours! you can't beat that. and baking soda/vinegar in the hair is great too, although admittedly harder to do while traveling. It also may take a few weeks to get over the 'oily' stage but its worth it. no more money on hair products!

'Becca said...

Abby, my hair tends to be oily, and I've had great success washing with a vinegar-only method. I minimized transition effects by using vinegar every other time (shampoo in between) when I first started.

Anonymous said...

I did use the formula recipe out of Nourishing Traditions....so much healthier than even the organic powdered stuff you can buy. If anyone is interested in trying it and does not have the NT book, the recipe is available on the Weston A Price website.

Beth said...

I am gonna try the hair stuff. And I just read about the Oil cleansing method of face cleaning (google it)

I use a diva cup (I know, just what you always wanted to know about me!) but that video helped me too. I can't wait to try the new methods next time! haha!

Fascinating stuff! I grew up with a lot of these ideas--my mom has always been into the natural stuff. When I went to college though, I insisted on buying real toothpaste...was too embarrassed to drag my tupperware 'o baking soda to the communal bathroom!

Did you know coconut oil is a pretty decent sunscreen, too? You have to reapply a little more frequently, but it works! It's a great...uh...treatment for yeast infections too. ;) That stuff is a major multi-tasker!

Not a fan of either the Keeper of the Diva. I've had one for about 10 years but just can't deal with it. Seventh Generation makes unbleached pads which are fine for my purposes.

Beth said...

I am totally going to try to use coconut oil as sunscreen for Leo. He gets a sunburn when we walk outside! He is so fair skinned!

Y'all are influencing me. Last night I washed Leo's hair with baking soda and water, and then rubbed him down with coconut oil. Then this morning I tried bs and acv in the shower for my hair and it was great!

Did I ever give you any of the soap I make? It is all natural (oils and lye make soap) and really gentle on your skin. I make it in a crock pot in my kitchen.

Christina @ Faith for Fertility said...

Love the tips! I'm a little apprehensive about trying them though. We'll see...maybe when I'm on vacation from work and won't stink up the office! LOL!

I have a DivaCup vs. a Keeper. I love it!

Lauren @ Magnify the Lord with Me said...

M&Co YES YOU DID!!!! And they're awesome! And they're even MORE awesome now that I know how pure they are! Thank you so much!!!
