Disney Gets Marriage Right?

Sleeping Beauty used to be my favorite princess.  I thought she was the prettiest.  And I loved the song she sang in the woods.  "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream.  I know you, the gleam in your eye is so familiar a gleam.  Well, I know it's true that visions are seldom what they seem.  But if I know you, I know what you'll do, you'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream."  Go ahead.  Watch it.  It will make your heart sigh.  (Skip ahead to 7:07).

But recently, while reading Love & War by John and Stacy Eldredge, I came to appreciate a different movie and my favorite princess has changed!  In the chapter "A Perfect Storm" which points out the sanctifying nature of marriage, they draw a parallel with Beauty and the Beast.  "In Beauty and the Beast, Beauty is a prima donna and the Beast has anger management issues.  She must find her courage and he must find his tenderness" (Love & War, pg. 48)  They explain,
In every one of those stories [fairy tales], the boy and the girl each carry a fatal flaw.  If they refuse their transformation- which is essential to the plot of the story- they'll never make it.  Evil will win, they will lose heart and split up, and there will be no happily ever after (Love & War, pg. 48).
Marriage is the same way.  We all have our fatal flaws, and we can chose to whine, complain and hurt from our spouse's flaws, or we can chose to examine and change our own flaws while embracing our husbands and making it safe for them to step out of their comfort zone.  Now that the Eldredges have pointed this out, I see it so clearly and love the idea of our marriages drawing us out of ourselves.  I can picture the Saints watching our "movie" and cheering us on, sighing with contentment when we bend and are drawn together.  (Think they have popcorn and a coke icee? :))
Tale as old as time.
true as it can be!
barely even friends,
then somebody bends
unexpectedly.

Just a little change
small to say the least
both a little scared
neither one prepared
beauty and the beast

Belle has been my favorite ever since I saw Beauty and Beast in the theaters. I was a young adult then (in college) and that story spoke to me. I love this look at it.

"Father, you're living in the past! This is the 14th century!"

Sleeping Beauty is my favorite because Prince Phillip is a dragon slayer. And he carried the sword of truth and the shield of virtue. Can you imagine that in a Disney movie today?
But Beauty and the Beast is a close runner-up.

Hi Lauren,
I'm a lurker here but I wanted to say that I hope you live long enough to have your granddaughter give you the present mine gave me a couple of years ago: She knew the theme from Beauty & the Beast was my favorite so, on Christmas day, she brought the family into the piano room & played & sang the song for me. She had learned it for her Christmas present to me. Needless to say, I cried!
