Munich = Beer!

Behold the Hofbrauhaus! Most famous beer house in the world! We just walked through on this part of our tour, but went back later to stay for a while.

One of Munich's famous beer gardens. A beer garden must have two things to be official: 1)chestnut trees (they provide great shade and they used to dig by the base of the trees to store the beer and keep it cool) and 2) tables with and without tablecloths. With table cloths means full service from the restaurant. Without tablecloths means you can bring your own food. This is particularly nice because many beer gardens are surrounded by outdoor markets!

A maypole is taken down every April and set up every May. Villages try to steal each other's Maypoles. Munich's has never been stolen, as it weighs two tons!

Munich's famous Glockenspiel in the tower above the Neues Rathaus. It plays three times a day in the summer. The top scene is a royal wedding from the 16th century. The Bavarian jouster fights the Lorraine jouster. Watch in the video below. The lower scene is the barrel makers dancing a jig.

After our city tour, we went to Saint Peter's Church, then took a Brewery Tour! I would like to develop a taste for beer while in Germany. (No better place to do it!) I figured the best first step is to take a brewery tour and develop an intellectual appreciation for beer. It was so much fun! Here's the microbrewery we visited called Paulaner Brauhaus. The brewmaster has to get a four year degree in brewing beer! The purity laws of Germany limit beer to four main ingredients: Hops, Water and Barley. Now they allow yeast as well.

Our fun table!
