THE WORD MUNICH comes from MONKS! Here's the symbol of this fine city which can be found painted on buildings (like this one) or even on man-hole covers! He holds a Bible in one hand and three fingers up on the other hand. Three fingers up with two down is a symbol of GOD- three persons and two natures of Christ. But in Munich it means THREE BEERS! :)

A Braille map of the city!

There are three Churches close to the Marianplatz. Here's the Cathedral- Frauenkirche- Cathedral of our Blessed Lady. It was Pope Benedict's Church when he was Bishop of Munich! They are very proud of this, naturally, and have this to honor him.

I didn't take any outside pictures because of construction, but here's the inside. This Church was built in just twenty years. Notice how you cannot see any windows. They are hidden by the columns. The legend is that the devil was furious when he saw yet another Church being built in Munich so he came down to check it out. At this point there was only one window and he couldn't see plans for anymore. "Ah ha!" He thought. "A dark church could be used for my purposes!" So he made a deal with the architect: no more windows and I'll help build the Church faster. When he came down to inspect and realized he'd been tricked, he was so angry that he stamped his foot and left the following footprint!

Behold the "devil's footprint!"

The English Gardens, Munich's "Central Park" is the largest on the continent with over 100,000 acres. It was designed by an American (though a traitor who fought on the wrong side of the Revolutionary War) in 1789 as a place to train troops.

A government building destroyed in the war and rebuilt to combine new and old. The new is made of glass to symbolize that government should be transparent. Perhaps we should rebuild our government buildings out of glass!

"Naked Park"! It was too cold for any nakedness today, but normally is flooded with sunbathers in the nude!

Check out the surfers under the bridge!! I cannot imagine how cold that water must be, coming from the Alps, but it was super fun to watch them glide back and forth!
