Salt of the Earth

Today I made bread.

I forgot to add the salt.

I will never forget again.

My bread did not rise correctly.  It's texture was off.  It took FOREVER to bake.  And I don't need to tell you- it did not taste good.

It made me wonder about the purpose of salt...

1.  Salt functions as a preservative.  It works as an antiseptic to keep meat from spoiling.  As Christians, we are being called to be "RUBBED" INTO SOCIETY  and prevent corruption.  It can also be used in an open wound.  Though it might hurt at first, it keeps the wound from festering.  The Truth can be painful to hear and understand at first, but it will set you free.

2.  Salt adds FLAVOR.  It not only brings a flavor of its own, but intensifies the sweetness.  It enhances all flavors including flour and butter.  Christ brings true JOY to the world and makes all aspects of life sweeter.

3. Salt makes dough stronger and tighter.  The Holy Spirit fortifies and strengthens us.

4. Salt slows down chemical reactions and the fermentation process to a steadier level.  Our faith evens out life. We don't have the extreme highs and lows when we are rooted and grounded in Christ.

5. Finally, salt makes people thirsty- as we should thirst for Jesus Christ

P.S.  My honey sent me an article this morning titled, "Chefs Call Proposed New York Ban on Salt 'Absurd'".  You can read about it here.  Now really.  Do we even have to go down this road?  (especially in view of the symbolic nature of salt?!)
