I don't consider myself an organic-guru. I actually think some pesticides and fertilizers can be a good things. Many studies have shown that they don't cause any harm when compared to organic food. They've enabled us to increase food production for the entire world. They eliminate a vast amount of fossil fuels needed to till and tend the extra land needed to grow more if pesticides are eliminated. Giving pesticides a definitive approval or disapproval is more complicated than meets the eye, and shouldn't be judged rashly
When I planted my tiny little garden, I was stunned at the amount of bugs that appeared to take the fruits of my labor. After trying a few organic methods, I busted out the chemical warfare pesticide and was quite happy with the results. In my next garden, I'll try preparing the soil differently and will attempt organic gardening again, but it's not the primary goal for me.
Think of how expensive organic produce is. Can you imagine if this was the only food available? Who could afford it? Logic says the prices would be even higher because without pesticides the supply would be much less. I rarely buy organic produce- only when the normal produce is out of stock or looks awful.
But while researching and learning more about traditional foods, I've come to appreciate foods as unprocessed as you can get them. Many of the food items I purchase now are labeled "Organic"- not because I'm seeking organic foods, but because I want pasture-raised or high fructose corn syrup free.
Throughout this week I'm sharing my thoughts on various foods that we eat. These are steps I have taken, am working on now, or hope to try soon. I'll cover
- sugar,
- milk,
- eggs,
- butter,
- salt,
- yogurt,
- grains,
- fclo/bo (you'll have to wait and see!)
- odds & ends and
- baby formula!
DISCLAIMER: I am not a nutritionist, doctor or even a scientist. My only expertise is that I love food and am highly motivated to do what is best for my family! It can be difficult to read various studies all of whom demonize the other side and claim to be right. I am trying to find the truth about nutrition, and am using this series to document and share what I've learned and concluded.

I am excited to see what you have to share!
I do love fclo! Was upset when they stopped carrying the chocolate. I thought it was the easiest to get down....I actually read something very interesting on the website I order from about vaccines.....
You need a shirt that says Im obsessed with sf! Hahaha ;)
Can't wait to read....
My front flower beds got infected with a fungus and I had to pull up everything. I wanted to kill the fungus and I got non-organic "fungus" killer. It said to suit up...jeans boots long sleeve face mask etc....It scared me and I haven't done it yet because that still gets into the waterways.
I'm taking a class on organic gardening every third Tuesday at the library. I do both when it comes to gardening but I'm still trying to figure it out.
I personally think whole foods produce taste much better then grocery store produce. so I'm still up in the air. Budget wise I buy better meat and not produce when local produce isn't available.
Oh and I'm really excited to read! Truthfully I would love to know what your grocery bill is weekly. ;). But you don't have to tell me! Hahaha
Do you fry with lard? ;).
LOL Sew! I get chocolate! Green Pastures with a BO blend.
Excellent question on the grocery bill. I'll answer that towards the end of the week.
I think LOCAL produce tastes so much better than regular grocery store. When we were in Germany, the commissary shipped all their produce from California. It was all terrible and made me crazy. I mean- they do grow produce in Germany... :) But their farmers market was too far to walk from base. : (
Thanks for your enthusiasm, you both! Julie- going to check out your header now! :)
I have issues with pesticides. After talking to my local organic farmer and seeing the organic oPtions I have for pest control I am anxious to give it a try. But ii have to wait till we move, I don't want to do all that work and move. Before reaping the benefits!
I'm not sure where I read but I do think that pesticides extract nutrients from food. I think it was my local WAPF lady who told me that. She said that there are no nutrients in grocery store oranges from some study. But that is going off the top of my head. :) What did they do before pesticides. I was just reading about it in my organic gardening stuff....
I was reading NT last night and it said that people whom have/had cancer do not have good gut flora! Go figure! ;) Do not get me started. The only problem is that I do not know how to add good fat via butter, milk and eggs when I can't eat them now. I actually think I have a hard time diegesting all grains except corn. Don't get me started on that! ;) I am a total fat girl! I love it! I can only eat so much cco. ;) I'm hoping given maybe a year of being off eggs and milk I might be able to add it back in but unfortunately I think I've had a milk allergy for years due to the excema on my arms.
That is why I'm a vegan meat eater! Probably a SF no no, I wish she would say what to do when damage is already done. hahaha I'm gonna get on my stock making and am gonna try her recipe for brown rice because I'm addicted to white rice. ;)
I hope you don't think I'm high jacking your comment box! I swear I could talk about this stuff all day long! It fascinates me and interests me! I do feel a great responisibility to feed my family nutritious food or why waste my time in the kitchen. :)
Ahhhh, You can delete me! ;)
Wait?! What? You get Chocolate? I thought they stopped carrying it? :) hahahaha I bought two bottles when they went on sale at GP. I am getting ready to order the orange capsules.....Maybe I should wait to talk to you.. :0
If you get bored call me or maybe not, I have to do this slowly or else I get crazy in the head. :) That's why I've been making changes slowly over the past few years. :) hahahaha
Oh and when did you start this and why am I just finding out the past few weeks? :) hahahaha
Rhi was this just understanded when we both talked? Or were we too busy talking about thyroid? :)
Sew. Dont get into nutrition unless asked, im not PC and therefore avoid the topic with most people! AND we were too busy with thyroid!
You can eat avocado for good fats! And clo...hmm I'll have to think on what else.
